ABOUT About Crawford Instruments
Crawford Instruments specializes in making, restoration and repair of the violin family of instruments and bows. I, Ian Crawford McWilliams, would like to welcome you. Crawford Instruments is an owner - operated business which I initiated at the end of my post-graduate studies in the making of stringed instruments at West Dean College, UK. After my studies I worked for 3 years at J.P.Guivier, the oldest established violin shop in London. Realising I wanted to challenge myself more I went to work for Frederic Chaudiere in Montpellier making modern Violin/Viola/Cello for two years. Presently, Crawford Instruments is managed privately from my workshop and includes commissioned work as well as restoration and repairs on stringed instruments.
I was born and raised in Western Canada and studied my apprenticeship in Joinery/Furniture Making in Vancouver, following which I ventured to England to study at West Dean College. West Dean College largely appealed to me because of its broad course and one on one tuition (Roger Rose) . This allowed me to explore and practice my love of carving and inlay work. Currently I try to divide my time between baroque and modern making. I also make a range of baroque bows. This diversity in my work always keeps me on my toes and wanting to learn more.
I now call Germany home and reside in the beautiful town of Brandenburg an der Havel just out side Berlin. Where I spend most of my time making both instruments and bows. There is inspiration at every corner from the birds and trees all around to the wonderful old church arcoss the street, one doesn't have to look far.
The instruments and bows shown on this web site are just a small example of the many models I have made. Please contact me with any inquires you may have.
